Tanning as become popular after the famous Coco Chanel introduced darker skin color and made it the stylish thing to do. Ever since then women have been trying to get the cherished dusk skin color and dermatologist have been trying to figure out a way to bring paleness back into fashion. Is summer sun really harmful, can tanning be dangerous, who should stay away from sun tanning, & what is the right way to tan to avoid skin problems? We set on a quest to answer all of these questions and here is what we found out.

Let’s start with what tan is. Tan is the skin’s defense reaction to the harmful effects of ultraviolet. The radiation goes through a large number of skin layers and not only heats up the skin but also influences the cells’ DNA, causing mutations. That is the reason why the skin protects itself. The epidermis, top skin layer, contains the cells called melanocytes that become activated in response to sunrays’ impact and produce the pigment called melanin thus creating the dusk interlayer which serves as a filter. This interlayer is what absorbs most of the ultraviolet, preventing its penetration into deeper skin layers. Figuratively speaking tan is the “umbrella” opened by the skin to protect itself from ultraviolet rays.

The tan itself or the dusk skin color is the final product. The beginning stage is the inflammation. Before becoming dusk the skin turns pink or red. The inflammation of higher degree causes sunburn along with blisters and pigment spots. Doctors have actually linked sunburns to cancer. Sunburns received in childhood increase the chances of development of melanoma, one of the most dangerous malignant tumors. Sunburns received at adult age increase the chances of skin cancer development. The tan itself is not harmful but it has to go through the sunburn stage, and sunburns are actually very dangerous. Besides tan has the tendency to accumulate, which means that all sunburns stay in the skin cells’ DNA. Burns received in childhood can surface and affect you even if you never tanned as an adult.

There are several types of skin based on its ability to suntan. People with the first skin type never get a tan but actually receive sunburn after being in the sun for only half an hour. People with the second skin type hardly ever get a tan and easily get sunburns. For people with the third skin type staying in the sun causes a slight burn, which then turns into tan, which can be pretty intense a lot of times. People with the fourth skin type suntan easily without getting sunburns. People with the fifth and sixth skin types have an increase level of melanin and can bear sun in any quantity without getting sunburned. Usually the Caucasians have their skin sensitivity anywhere from the first up to the fourth skin types.

There are people who should never tan. These are the people who have first and second skin types, or people with cancer, or those who have a history of melanomas in their family. You are not allowed to be tanning during chemo therapy or while on antibiotics, since it can cause skin’s hyper pigmentation. People suffering with psoriasis, chronic disease of the immune system that appears on the skin, usually in the form of thick, red, scaly patches, should be extremely careful about tanning, in some cases sun can treat the outbursts but in some cases it can make them even worse. Pregnant women should stay away from the sun as well.

So what is the right way to tan? Preferably you should start tanning in early spring so that by the time summer rolls around you already have a safe tan. If that is not something you can realistically accomplish then at least stay away from the sun from 10am till 4pm when the sun rays are the strongest. You can prepare your skin by going to the tanning salon, which is still harmful but as the saying goes you should choose the lesser of two evils.

Keep in mind that your skin suntans faster in the water, which serves as the lens and amplifies the sun’s strength. The sunrays go into the water up to the depth of 3 feet. It is especially easy to burn if you stay in the sun right after swimming. In this case the water creates little lenses all over your skin which increases the chances of getting sunburn.

In case you do get sunburned here are a few things you can do. Soak a cloth in equal parts cold water and milk and apply to the burned area. You can also take a cold shower or a cold bath, just make sure to avoid soap. Use the aloe vera gel or aloe vera ice cubes to soothe your skin. Make sure to wear loose-fitting cotton clothes so that it doesn’t irritate the affected skin. Also drink a lot of water, if you are sunburned you get dehydrated easily. Finally, try to avoid getting sunburned next time by following the tips you’ve learned so far and using lots of sunscreen.

A common question is do sunscreens with SPF protect your skin. They do protect your skin from inflammation or burns, but not from the harmful impact of ultraviolet rays. If you tan and at the same time don’t burn the risk of developing a melanoma does not actually decrease. In this case the best defense is light cotton clothes that are not snug at all. Although you will not get tan wearing that.

Usually you chose the sunscreen based on your skin type and what exactly you are trying to achieve. The sunscreen with SPF 100 protects your skin a 100% but this protection acts only for a short while after the cream’s application. In this case you will not get a tan. If your goal is to actually get tan you are better off with sunscreen with SPF 15-20.

A lot of people nowadays use auto tanning lotions. We recommend using them in cases of extreme necessity. Anything that’s applied to skin especially on a large area gets inside your body – these auto tanning lotions get absorbed, go through liver and get deactivated. It’s not worth it to put your body through additional burdens.

Another popular concern is the sun aging your skin. The negative impact of the sun is very apparent when demonstrated on the grape. The ripe berries get dried out in the sun and turn into raisins. The same thing happens to the skin of those people who tan in excessive amounts. The advocates and opponents of tanning will look very different. There actually has been an experiment conducted on two twin sisters, one of which lived in California and the other one in the north of the USA. The latter one looked way younger than the one living in California and being exposed to sun all the time.

Of course it is impossible to stay away from the sun completely, but following the tips mentioned above will ensure better and safer tanning.

The world is a big place and there are many different cultures, Europeans, Scandinavians, Asians, Africans, Hispanics and many, many more. Each of these cultures tends to have certain characteristics such as eye colour, hair colour, skin colour, etc,. Inherent with cultural backgrounds is a difference in skin types. For example, western cultures such as the central and northern Europeans have a tendency to fair complexions, hair and eye colour, while southern Europeans dent to have darker hair, brown eyes and darker, olive skin tones.

Africans and African Americans, have very dark or almost black skin, usually dark or black hair and brown eyes. Genetically, this skin type is less susceptible to the UV rays, although their skin can still get burned.

Asians on the other hand have a yellowish skin tone and can have brown or blue eyes but have mostly dark or black hair. Yes, genetics does have its opinion on how we look. The cultural differences are reflected in the skin and the genetic factors play an important role in how well our skin looks, how ‘tough’ it is and how vulnerable it is to certain skin problems.

For example, cultures that have a tendency to body hair, also have a tendency to oily skin and therefore have a potential problem with blocked secretory glands resulting in pimples and other skin problems. On the other hand, the Irish, who have a tendency to red hair and very fair skin, have less of a problem with oily skin, but they do tend to get burned easily and thus stand a greater risk to skin cancers. Similarly the Scandinavians and other central and northern Europeans and Americans.

Below are some generalised characteristics of various skin types from different cultural backgrounds:

Skin Characteristics of people with Anglo-Saxon origins

Fair, dry thin-skinned

Scars heal well

Signs of aging appear earlier

Burn easily in the sun

Bruising more obvious

Increased chance of skin cancer

Skin Characteristics of people with Southern Mediterranean origins

Oily, olive dark complexion

Signs of aging appear later

Cartilage tends to droop

Darker, thicker scars more common

Wrinkles appear later and in more localized areas

Skin cancer is rare

Skin Characteristics of people with Northern European origins / German and Scandinavian

Fair, blue-eyed, blonde

Thin skin

Scars heal well

Signs of aging appear early

Bruising more obvious

Greater chance of skin cancer

Skin Characteristics of people with African/African-American origins

Signs of aging appear very late

Very little fine wrinkling

Formation of keloids is possible

Pigmentation changes may occur

Thicker cartilage hard to change

Skin cancers are very rare

Skin Characteristics of people with Northern European/Irish and northern England

Ruddy freckled complexion

Red hair

Scars usually thin

Signs of aging appear later

Bruises easily

Pigmentation problems

Skin cancers are most common in this type

Skin Characteristics of people with Asian origins

Signs of aging appear late

Fine wrinkling does not usually occur

Pigmentation changes may occur

Skin cancers are very rare

Skin Characteristics of people with Southern European origins

Dark, oily brunette complexion

Signs of aging appear later

Fine wrinkling less common

Bruising lasts longer

Scars may be thicker and darker

Skin cancers are less common

Identifying the correct, natural skin care system for your skin’s characteristics is essential and may need to be adjusted depending on your specific genetic influences, as within each of these groups, there is a wide range in skin tones, which tend to overlap from group to group.

Each of the different categories of skin characteristics has various advantages and disadvantages specific to that group. However, the overall structures and functions of our skin are very similar and are therefore cared for in very similar ways. Knowing your skin’s particular strengths and weaknesses, you can tailor your skin care approach to your particular skin-characteristics.

The sun, stress and pollution can all contribute to imperfections in your skin. Fortunately, peel procedures can remove these imperfections and turn back the years.

Peel Away Those Damaged Outer Layers of Skin

As much as we like to believe otherwise, our daily lives show up on our body in one obvious place – the face. For men, the slightly weathered look can be an attractive option as can well groomed gray hair. For women, facial blemishes, wrinkles and uneven pigmentation can give rise to unhappiness on a big scale. Peels offer one option to counter the impact.

A facial peel is designed to restore the youthful look of your skin. It is not a form of facelift nor a surgery per se. Instead, it is a technique where the outer layer of your skin is literally peeled off to reveal new skin below. The technique can produce dynamite results when the goal is to resolve wrinkles and blemishes. It can also be used to addressed skin weathered from excessive exposure to the sun or which has developed uneven pigmentation. Importantly, a peel is not designed nor will it accomplish any kind of a lift for parts of the face that have developed a droop including eyelids. Such restorations require facelift surgery.

Unlike a surgical procedure, a peel is not for everyone. This is because the peel is only best for certain skin types and pigments. You should consult with a medical professional to find out if you are a candidate for the procedure. In general, however, individuals with fair skin and light damage gain the best benefits.

In general, a peel takes roughly one to two hours for the entire face. Some candidates require less extensive peels and less time is required as a result. You are not sedated unless there is reason specific to your situation.

Following the procedure, you are going to have some unique sensations. New skin is being exposed to air for the first time, so throbbing, tingling and so on can be common. Your medical professional can fill you on the impact based upon your specific skin condition and procedure.

Peels are a very common procedure. They can make a marked difference in appearance without the necessity of invasive surgery.

Several medical studies have proved that tanning is beneficial to the human body. The major benefit is the strengthening of the bones. That is, the absorbed ultraviolet radiation activates substances in the skin the much needed vitamin D, and vitamin D is important in making the bones tough.

There is, however, another documented benefit of tanning. Tanning helps the skin protect itself from further exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This was reported in the September 1999 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. The report was authored by Dr. Barbare A. Gilchrest and Dr. Mark S. Eller. Both worked at the Department of Dermatology at the Boston University School of Medicine.

The journal report stated five important points:

1. The UV radiation produces the protective melanin pigments.

Why are melanin pigments considered protective? The melanin in the skin helps the body expel excess energy from further ultraviolet exposure. The excess energy can cause harm but, with the aid of melanin, this is removed from the body in the form of heat. The melanin can also deactivate the free radicals, which are infamous for their destructive action on the body.

2. Tanned skin prevents UVR injury.

Related to above findings, the authors reported that a tanned skin is less prone to blisters and sunburn. Blisters and sunburns are UVR damages that a skin sustains when the skin can no longer tolerate the UV it receives. A tanned skin has a higher tolerance of UV rays. Thus, having a tanned skin is similar to wearing a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor of 3-5.

3. Tanning provides photo-protection.

When a person undergoes the tanning process, the stratum corneum layer of his skin is considerably thickened. With this thicker layer, the skin becomes less sensitive to the ultraviolet radiation. Such is called photo-protection. A person with pale white skin may not attain the dark olive color that he desires but his stratum corneum has achieved a certain thickness that gives him photo-protection.

4. Tanning elevates the skin’s repair capacity.

One of the greatest fears of people when they face tanning is the disease called skin cancer. But skin cancer only happens when a person abuses the tanning process. That is, he stays in the tanning bed longer than what is recommended by the manufacturer or the tanning salon professional. Skin cancer happens when too many damaged and abnormal cells are produced. With gradual and responsible tanning, the skin’s capacity to repair itself is actually enhanced. When the skin repairs itself, it gets rid off abnormal cells and fixes damage cells.

5. Both natural tan and acquired tan gives the same skin protection.

All the above-described protection obtained from a tanned skin is not limited to a natural tan. An acquired tanned skin can also provide the same protection.

With added and added of us compassionate the austere consequences
of sun tanning, we are searching for alternatives. Remember the
first cocky tanners that hit the shelves abounding years ago – wella
you became burning allotment orange. Able-bodied we’ve arise forth way
babe! The new blurred tanning articles are abundant added natural
looking than accomplished ancestors of blurred tanning products.

How do Blurred Tanning Articles Work? Your derma is fabricated up of
two capital layers: the alien band alleged the and the close layer
called the dermis. In both accustomed sun tanning and blurred sun
tanning the activity occurs in the covering level. The deepest
layer of the covering is alleged the amount basale and this is
the band that is afflicted during accustomed sun tanning. The
stratum corneum is the exoteric band of the covering and this
is the band that is afflicted by a lot of sunless-tanning products.

In todays bazaar there are several altered kinds of
sunless-tanning articles available. Back the aboriginal 1960s people
have been able to get their tan from a bottle. Coppertone was
the aboriginal to hit the bazaar with its Quick Tanning Lotion. What
it is a lot of remembered for is the admirable allotment orange hue it
produced. There accept been abounding advancements in cocky tanning
since the aboriginal years. Now adays you can acquirement tanning pills,
selt tanners, blurred tanners, bronzers, and a host of other
similar blazon products. You can smooth, bash or aerosol on a light
bronze afterglow or a deep, aphotic tan. A lot of of these articles yield 45
to 60 account to work, and again addition brace of hours to dry
properly. The a lot of able blurred or cocky tanning products
contain the alive accretion DHA [dihydroxyacetone]. DHA is a
colorless amoroso that interacts with the asleep beef amid in
the amount corneum of the epidermis. As the amoroso interacts
with the asleep derma cells, the derma changes color. This changes
last from 3 to 7 days, and again you’ll charge to reapply. Gels,
lotions or sprays that accommodate DHA are said to be the most
reliable. There are added actual acceptable articles on the bazaar as
well, such as tan accelerators that accommodate the amino acid
tyrosine. Tyrosine stimulates and increases the accumulation of
melanin, thereby accelerating the tanning process. Currently
there is no accurate abstracts accessible to abutment these claims.
Tanning pills accommodate canthaxanthin, a blush accretion acclimated in
some foods. Canthaxanthin is accustomed by the FDA for aliment use,
but it is not accustomed the use of it in tanning agents. This is
because if it is acclimated as a blush accretion actual baby amounts
are needed, but if acclimated as a tanning abettor abundant larger
quantities are needed. After canthaxanthin is eaten, it is
deposited all over your body, including in your skin, which
turns an orange-brown colour. These types of tanning pills have
been affiliated to ancillary furnishings such as hepatitis and canthaxanthin
retinopathy. Canthaxanthin retinopathy is a action in which
yellow deposits anatomy in the retina of the eye. Bronzers are also
very popular. Bronzers arise in the anatomy of powders or
moisturizers. They actualize an burning tan that can be removed
with soap and water. Bronzers are absolutely a band of make-up,
because they alone cast the apparent of your skin. If you’re going
to be outdoors accomplish assertive to still use your approved sunscreen
protection. Blurred tanning agents do not assure you from the
damaging application of the sun unless they accept UVA and UVB
protection. Even those articles that do accommodate Your blurred tan
will alone endure as continued as the black derma band charcoal intact
on your body, so moisturize, moisturize, and bathe some
more, because this will apathetic down the address action and
extend the activity of your blurred tan. Tanning Mother Natures Way

When you tan, what your melanocytes aftermath melanin colorant in
reaction to ultraviolet ablaze in sunlight which stimulateds
melanin production. The colorant is able to blot UV radiation
in sunlight, so it is able to assure the beef from UV damage.
Melanin assembly is apathetic and takes a fair bit of time, which
is why humans cannot get a sun tan in one day [although there is
a baby allotment of the citizenry that can]. What you charge to
do is betrayal yourself to the suns UV application for a abbreviate aeon of
time for amid 4 to 7 days. By accomplishing this your beef will
build up a akin of protection. For abounding contest melanin
production is continuous, so the derma is consistently bistered to
some degree, so they accept a connected aegis from UV
radiation. Actual low blight ante are apparent in these races.
Melanocytes produces two altered pigments: eumelanin which is
brown, and phaeomelanin which is chicken and red. Red-heads
produce added phaeomelanin and beneath eumelanin, which is why they
don’t tan well.

Sunlight arrives on apple in three forms: bittersweet (heat),
visible ablaze and ultraviolet. Ultraviolet ablaze is classified
into three categories: UVA which causes tanning, UVB which
damages the derma and causes sunburn, and UVC which is filtered
out by the atmosphere and never alcove earth. 99% of the sun’s
UV radiation at sea akin is UVA. UVB is the one the reeks havoc
on our derma causing abortive aging, abysmal wrinkles, and in the
worst cases cancer.

UV radiation is reflected by altered surfaces so you can
amplify your acknowledgment depending on the cogitating surface. Snow
reflects up to 90% of UV ablaze and has been accepted to could cause snow
blindness and astringent sunburn from skiing on a brilliant day. Sand
reflects up to 20% of UVB that hits it so you get added UV
exposure at the beach. The cast to this is that some things
absorb about all the UV radiation. Glass is a absolute archetype -
that’s why you don’t bake in your car on a hot day. Sunscreens
use chemicals that accept UV-absorbing properties.

Sunburn Caucasian humans do not accept a accustomed congenital in
protection as do abounding races. So if you are a caucasion with no
tan again your derma is not adequate from the UV rays, authoritative you
susceptible to sunburn if you absorb too abundant time in the sun.
Sunburn leaves your derma red and acutely painful, and in
severe cases blisters will appear.

Over the advance of several hours, apparent derma turns ablaze red
and becomes acutely aching if touched. A lot of times you can
feel the calefaction beaming from the skin. If you get a sunburn
you accept accept asleep derma cells. The alien covering are already
dead derma cells, but just beneath these beef is a continuous
supply of new beef accepting created to furnish the top band of
dead cells. If you sit in the sun you betrayal yourself to
ultraviolet ablaze which kills cells. The ultraviolet ablaze is
able to ability the band of active beef in the covering and
begins to accident and annihilate them. Your physique knows that beef are
being killed, so your allowed arrangement is activated to apple-pie things
up. Claret breeze to the breadth is added which opens up capillary
walls so that white claret beef can arise in and abolish the
damaged cells. The added claret breeze makes your derma balmy and
red. The assumption endings for affliction actuate sending signals to your
brain. The damaged beef absolution chemicals that actuate pain
receptors and this is the end aftereffect area your sunburn hurts or
is actual sensitive. You can abstain sunburn by using a proper
strength sunscreen or clip yourself accepting a tan which then
acts as a accustomed sunscreen created with its own appropriate pigment
cells in the epidermis. If you accept a nice tan and go out in
the sun you don’t get burnt, unless your so fair you never tan
in which case you charge to use sunscreen all the time Evidence is
now assuming that the massive access in derma blight is as a
result of sun acknowledgment that occurred, in abounding cases, over 20
years ago. So yield affliction of your derma by using sunscreen, it’s
the alone derma you’ve got for your lifetime.

We all assume to strive for the affluent aureate blush of summer. It
lifts our alcohol and makes us feel bigger all over. Which ever
method you adjudge to use to get that aureate amber skin, use
common faculty to accomplish your goals and consistently abrasion sunscreen
when outside. Your derma will acknowledge you 20 or 30 years from now
when your not all channelled like a clip and not ability skin
cancer treatments. Yield affliction of your skin, it’s got to las you a
lifetime!

br
Over time, our skin matures through a process known as photo-aging. Photo-aging consists of premature aging from sun exposure and smoking and chronological aging that is influenced by our genetics. These changes are manifested as thickening of the top layer or epidermis of the skin, a decrease in oil production, thinning of the deeper layer of skin as a result of the loss of collagen, elastic fibers and fat and thickening of the muscles of facial expression. This leads to a dull complexion, sagging skin and wrinkles. These unwelcome changes occur as a result of the pull of gravity, facial movements and damage over time to DNA, collagen and cell membranes by free radicals.

Fortunately, many new and effective cosmeceutical skin care lines have become available to correct and protect against the effects of photo-aging. These products are designed to reduce the appearance of fine lines, irregular pigmentation and to improve the overall clarity and texture of the skin. All of the currently available cosmetic products utilize one or more of the following agents – Sunscreens, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Anti-oxidants, Retinoids, Human Growth Factors and bleaching agents.

Sunscreens

Regular use of an effective sunscreen is the single most important step to maintain healthy looking skin.Even though our skin loses about 1% of its collagen and elastic tissue per year after the age of 25, it is the effect of ultraviolet light from the sun that causes most of the visible effects of aging skin as well as skin cancer. It is impossible to completely eliminate exposure to UV radiation but it can be minimized by protective clothing and the proper use of an effective sunscreen, one that protects us from both photo-aging UVA rays as well as cancer-causing UVB rays.If your skin is sensitive, use sunscreens that have physical blockers such as micronized zinc oxide and titanium oxide. If you are acne prone, use oil-free or noncomedogenic sunscreens.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

AHAs or fruit acids are present in various foods. The most commonly used AHA is glycolic acid which is derived naturally from sugar cane and can also be synthesized.AHAs are commonly used in low concentrations in cleansers, moisturizers and toners and in higher concentrations in peeling solutions.Their principal effect is to exfoliate the damaged outer layer of the skin and to refine its texture and appearance.AHAs also unclog pores and loosen the barrier between cells to allow effective penetration of other topical agents including moisturizers, retinoids, bleaching agents and antioxidants.AHAs are also outstanding hydrating agents and are thought to stimulate collagen production within the deeper layers of the skin.

Furfuryladenine

Furfuryladenine is marketed in a moisturizing base as Kinerase. It is an alternative for those who cannot tolerate the acid-based AHA rejuvenation products. It is actually a plant growth hormone that has been shown to improve hydration, texture, discoloration as well as reduce fine wrinkles when used for at least 6 months. It is extremely gentle and may be used as a moisturizer in conjunction with AHAs or other agents or alone for skin rejuvenation especially in those with sensitive skin.

Antioxidants

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a naturally occurring antioxidant that is also available in skin care products and protects the skin from free radical damage produced by normal aging, pollution and UV radiation from sun exposure.Free radicals result when oxygen is burned in biological systems to provide energy for growth and repair. These reactive molecules can damage normal cellular processes and structure and are a key contributor to the aging process. While sunscreens remain the mainstay for protecting the skin against UV – induced changes, the addition of topical antioxidants provides added protection against these free radicals.

Human Growth Factor

Various human growth factors have been incorporated into topical preparations. They are harvested as a by-product of tissue-cultured human skin. HGFs have been shown to reduce the number and depth of wrinkles and fine lines as well as improve skin texture and elasticity.

Vitamin A or Retinoids

Vitamin A acid also known as Retin A was developed over 25 years ago as an acne treatment but has been found to be effective for the prevention and treatment of skin aging. The benefits include improvement in fine wrinkles, uneven pigmentation and rough skin texture and an increase in collagen production leading to healthier skin. These benefits are related to the dose and duration of use with optimum results occurring after a year.Topical retinoids can be very irritating and most patients will initially experience redness, flaking and increased sun sensitivity.Newer formulations including Retin A Micro and Renova utilize improved delivery methods to minimize irritation.Another new retinoid, Tazorac, has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of resistant hyperpigmentation such as melasma.

Bleaching Agents

Hydroquinone is the most commonly used agent for bleaching brown marks, irregular pigment and melasma. It blocks the formation of melanin therefore the pigment will return when the product is discontinued.Aggressive exfoliation and sun protection are necessary for best results. No bleaching cream can quickly improve the appearance of brown spots and results take at least 6 weeks to 3 months.

An ideal skin rejuvenation routine incorporates several products in a complimentary fashion.Cosmeceuticals help prolong and complement other cosmetic rejuvenation procedures.

br
If youre anything like most baby boomers, after graying hair, poor eyesight, weight gain and winkles, age spots rank fifth on your list of aging nuisances. But you can find comfort in erasing those age advertisers right from your own kitchen.
What Causes Age Spots
To protect your skin against excessive sun exposure, your skin makes cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes create the dark brown pigment called melanin. The melanin makes your skin look darker or suntanned.
But sometimes, your typical day in the sun causes an uneven jump in melanocytes. This awkward production creates irregular coloring or pigmentation of the skin.
The resulting solar lentigines, or what most people call liver spots or age spots, can appear brown, black or gray. Age spots pop up on the areas of the skin most readily exposed to the sun, like the chest, back, face and hands.
Even youngsters can get age spots with too much unprotected sun exposure.
How to Avoid Age Spots Completely
Preventing age spots proves the best way to completely avoid them. This includes:
1. Avoiding intense sunlight hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
2. Wearing a hat and long sleeve shirt in the sun.
3. Applying sunscreen 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapplying it every two hours.
Precautions
Additionally, note that the sun and excess chemicals dont mix. For instance,
most often in middle-aged women, might mistake irregular areas of reddish-brown pigmentation called poikiloderma for age spots.
Poikiloderma results from chronic sun exposure combined with sun-sensitive chemicals in cosmetics or perfume. Hence, poikiloderma most frequently appears on the side of the neck or on the cheeks.
Sunscreen Is More Potent Than You Thought
You may feel annoyed with the repeated advise of slathering yourself with sunscreen, but a study published in the October 14, 1993 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine gives you reason to appreciate your sunscreen an effective age spot eraser.
In the study, researchers found that among sunscreen users, those who rubbed on the most cream with the greatest regularity had the largest reduction in actinic keratoses.
Actinic keratoses (AKs) describe the rough, red, scaly patches, crusts or sores that measure anywhere from one-quarter to one-inch in diameter. Like most other age spots, youll find actinic keratoses on body areas most readily exposed to the sun.
How To Minimize the Appearance of Age Spots
Eat your age spots away
Research studies also reveal the benefits of eating your nutrients to reduce the appearance of age spots. The water-soluble pigment found in most vegetables, fruits, grain, flowers, seeds, leaves and bark, called flavanoid provides numerous antioxidant properties.
In research studies, flavanoids even prevented cancer formation in animals.
Likewise, youll find age spot reducing properties in soy products. The protein extracts of soybean and soymilk contain several different estrogen-like substances called isoflavones. One study showed that soy isoflavones might lighten age spots.
Home Remedies
Erasing your age spots can begin right in your own kitchen. In Japan, the rice based drink, sake, serves as an age spot lightener when applied to the skin.
You can also use lemon juice to lighten age spots. Simply dab a cotton ball in freshly squeezed lemon juice and apply the liquid to the age spots twice daily- once in the morning and once in the evening. Warning: Lemon juice makes the skin photosensitive so ensure to protect your skin with sunscreen before enjoying the sunshine.
Pull a green papaya out of the fridge and use the fleshy side of the skin to reduce age spots. Just apply the papaya to the spots for 15-20 minutes daily and repeat until you attain the desire lightness.
Of course, since home remedies offer an inexpensive and gentle way to reduce age spots, they require time to see results- usually six to eight weeks.
What To Do Right Now To Stop Age Spots
Because age spots, poikiloderma and actinic keratoses can serve as warning signs for skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends scheduling a professional skin examination each year.
You can find out how to give yourself a skin examination by visting http://www.skincarephysicians.com. Use this information now before your forget, because before you know it, the sixth aging nuisance for baby boomers- memory loss-will creep in on you.
The appearance of a strange colored marking on the skin at birth has always been a rather peculiar physiological occurrence, and for some a cause for alarm. Why do people have birthmarks? Is it a disfigurement? Is it a sign of some sort of disease? Could it even have some mystical property?

Although not mystical in the superstitious sense, the answers as to why do people have birthmarks remain mysterious nonetheless. What is known about them is that while they typically appear from birth, there are instances where they emerge after the baby has been born. Some birthmarks eventually disappear as time goes by, while there are others that remain with the person for the rest of their lives. Birthmarks can be either smooth or rough in texture, and they vary not only in shape and size, but also in color; from black and/or blue, to brown, to gray or white, even red, pink or purple.

In spite of how unsightly a birthmark may look, one can take heart that they do not pose any threat to a persons health at all (but one never knows, so it doesnt hurt to have it looked at by a doctor, just in case). While no one is as yet certain regarding exactly why do people have birthmarks, they have been attributed to a few possible causes. It has been said that their appearance might indicate the presence of an additional pigment in the skin. They could also be caused by a grouping together of blood vessels, or perhaps an abnormal growth of particular blood vessels.

As mentioned, birthmarks come in different forms, and they have in fact been classified according to certain unique types. Salmon Patches are flat, thin markings that are usually located on the back of the neck, on the upper lip, on the upper eyelid or right between the two eyebrows. Colored either red or light pink, Salmon Patches are also referred to as Angel Kisses, Macular Stains, and Stork Bites.

Congenital Moles are brown-colored birthmarks of varied shapes and sizes that can show up on any part of the body. Cafbr
Cosmetic laser surgery came about almost by accident when you consider how it began. In the 1950s lasers were created for various things including that of the medical field. Lasers in the medical field were used as medical instruments. The lasers were designed to cut through the tissue in order to keep the bleeding of the patient to a minimum. Lasers were also used to help reach those body parts that were in some way obstructed.

So now, the medical field is filled with laser surgery as a better way to operate on a patient making the surgeons life a little easier. The best part about the laser instrument is the ability to adjust the wavelength of the laser without harming other aspects of the body. Cosmetic laser surgery is used for resurfacing. In other words, skin is replenished by the use of lasers to creating younger looking skin. Below are a few important points about cosmetic laser surgery.

?Younger looking skin. When you under go cosmetic laser surgery you are obtaining a fresh look. This means you can look ten to twenty years younger depending on how much you took care of your skin in your early life. Those who used products during their youth and did not let the sun harm their skin can look twenty years younger after cosmetic laser surgery.

?Precautions for those looking to have cosmetic laser surgery include reducing sunbathing to nil to avoid damaging their skin again.

?Laser surgery typically lasts for eight to ten years before you need another treatment.

?Speaking with at least two cosmetic laser surgery doctors may benefit you. This surgery is not easy. You may find that you are not comfortable with the procedure and it is not always the right move for everyone. You may also find that you are more comfortable with another physician than the first person you spoke with.
