The first hair rule of summer is protection from the harmful rays of the sun. The sun can dehydrate hair, fade colour and leave your hair feeling brittle and unmanageable. Use a leave-in UV protection product to block out harmful rays and protect your hair. Remember that your hair is affected by the sun everyday, not only when you are lying by the pool or on the beach, so get into the habit of using a UV protection product all the time.

It may also be necessary to add a moisturising treatment to your hair care routine. Try a moisturising masque once or twice a week in place of your conditioner. For an extremely concentrated moisture boost, visit your stylist for an in-salon moisture treatment.

Swimming can be even worse for your hair. Saltwater can leave your hair feeling dry and brittle and Chlorine is a harsh chemical that makes water very hard, causing noticeable dryness to hair. Rinse your hair in freshwater after swimming and, if you can, re-apply your UV protection product.

If you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun, a cap offers the best protection.

SUMMER HAIR PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS

1. Your environment in summer can affect your hair colour, causing it to fade faster or lighten.
• The sun can slightly lighten natural colours enhancing gold tones and causing slight brassiness.
• UV rays and Chlorine can deteriorate pigment, stripping colour and causing fading and brassiness
• Exposure to the sun and sea salt lifts the pigments in the hair, slightly lightening natural colour and fading artificial colour.
• Some people are more active in summer and so shampoo their hair more regularly, causing their colour to fade faster.

Your leave-in UV protection product will help to control this, but there are also home care products available which will specifically help to lock the colour in and maintain its vibrancy.

2. Summer brings rain, and it can sometimes be difficult to achieve a smooth blow dry when its raining and there is a lot of moisture in the air. Applying a leave-in blow drying product will help you to create a smoother look. If your hair is naturally curly, apply a straightening cream before blow drying. This will help the blow-wave to last longer and will also help you to straighten your hair more easily. Concentrate on blow drying the roots and the ends of your hair really well. These are often the areas that get the least attention and cause the hair to loose its sleekness quickly.
After blow-drying, apply a small amount of silicone or anti-humidity product to the mid-lengths and ends to seal them, and help keep them straight and smooth.

3. One of the most common colour problems encountered in summer is that Chlorine can discolour blonde hair. It can cause a chemical reaction that turns both natural chemically enhanced blondes green.

To remedy this at home, add just a few drops of mercurochrome to water. Dip the hair into the water watch the colour carefully. You will see the colour change as the red pigment neutralizes the green. Rinse straight away. If you dont have mercurochrome handy, use tomato sauce. The stain of the dye in the tomato sauce neutralises the stain of the chemical reaction.

If you swim often, use a clarifying shampoo to fully remove traces of the chlorine from your hair. You can also help prevent hair from staining by sleeking it back with gel. Silicones and gels will coat the hair and help prevent water from entering the cuticle, so minimizing damage. A swimming cap offers the best protection if you swim really often. Those with fair skin are much more likely to have several freckles, whereas those with darker skin do not have nearly as many. Freckles are small flat brown spots that appear on sun-exposed skin, generally on the face and arms. Freckles become darker with greater sun exposure as some are more susceptible to obtaining freckles than others. Ultraviolet rays from the sun activate pigment producing skin cells (melanocytes) which produce pigment (melanin). That increased amount of melanin results in dark or brown spots on the skin. These spots are common and most everyone obtains some at some point in life.

People who have a great amount of freckles may have an increased risk of having skin cancer later in life compared to those who do not have freckles. If the size or shape of your freckles is changing, it would be ideal to seek a physician to be evaluated. Freckles are a very common skin trait, although if not considered properly, it can lead to other skin complications later in life.

If you are not prone to obtaining freckles, be aware of the dangers of skin cancer due to excessive sun exposure. The best and most effective way to prevent freckles is to limit your sun exposure time. If you do go in the sun a lot, always be sure to wear sunblock. They are a part of the natural aging process, and unlike age spots, freckles are common in childhood and fade with age in some cases. Freckles are more common in those with lighter skin, red or blond hair, and in those who sunburn easily. They are not a skin disorder. Having freckles is generally a genetic trait, and although are found predominantly on the face, may appear on any skin exposed to the sun. Freckles also commonly are found in clusters where the produced melanin is more concentrated. A person with a good amount on their face are often embarrassed, however some people find it attractive and gives the person the character.

Bleaching creams, chemical peels and laser resurfacing are other treatment options available besides limited sun exposure to limit the appearance of freckles. Talk with your physician to decide what the best treatment is for you, and consider all the benefits and risks that go along with the suggested procedure. Freckles will reappear if they have been altered with creams or lasers and not protected from the sun. The cost of these other treatments can be very expensive and risky, but in some cases allow the freckles to diminish after time.

Since freckles are harmless and normal, you should not worry too much about the possible dangers later in life. If you feel that the clusters are increasing and they are looking darker and constantly change in shape, please see a local skin care physician today. You can decide which treatment option will best help your situation, by lightening or even removing freckles that you might think are cancerous and can lead to other serious skin problems.br
